Where is the thread about buying a cheap detector and hacking/upgrading it?

I read it a few weeks ago but now can't find it.

It had something to do with buying a cheap knock-off brand metal detector, but if you opened it up and fiddled with the innards, it turned into a decent machine (at least for a backup, for a beginner, for the kids, etc.)

Is this making any sense?
