About to start beach/water hunting. My scoop enough?

Sand Scoop " Standart -9m " Metal Detector Tool from Genuine Stainless Steel 2mm
I purchased one and its great! Youl need to get a shovel handle for it and a galvenized screw for holding shovel down.

Was the edge even welded?

I just drew out some plans and going to make myself a scoop with free stuff I find LOL.
My target price is everything has to be FREE from the dump or just find it laying around.
$200.00 for a scoop is just crazy to me.

In your sig your swinging a ctx 3030.. how is 200$ more for a scoop too much?

You have a CTX and a Equinox but won't spend $200 on a scoop? That's like buying a high horsepower car and putting 87 octane in it, then driving the speed limit.

Listen to what people are telling you. DO NOT CHEAP OUT. I promise you, you will regret it, and likely at the worst time. ie, you'll be having a great hunt and SNAP....hunt over..b/c of a gear failure that could have been avoided by buying quality the first time.

Let me reiterate that point since you seem to be fixated on price only.

DO NOT CHEAP OUT ON THE SCOOP!

X2! Do not become one of those people that learn the hard way on this. Would you put cheap, bald tires on a Ferrari?

Also don't be like Earl and buy 20 scoops only to make Scoop porn pics to post on the internet vs actually using them. There's a happy medium, guy!

Doesn't matter what I spent on my detectors.

I hear what you are screaming:lol: I make some out of stainless from stripped out commercial kitchens. Made a friend one out of a deep fryer for French fries he has been using since 2011. Even made a barbecue place a stainless fork for their pit out of a couple stainless table legs. Got free barbeque for a month. I get the time I will show you how to make a scoop from a stainless table:lol:

With scoops it is cheaper to buy quality once than buy garbage several times. My stavr has held up very well for me over the years. I am a water hunter, but not deeper than snorkel tip. If you are a diver forget the scoop and hand fan...

Drilling sheet metal

Years ago when i was renting 1/2 a building the renter of the other side came over and asked to borrow an electric drill and 1/2" drill bit. I told him (he was not a machinist) that it was dangerous. He said "no problem, I know what to do" so I gave him the drill and yelled to an employee "call an abulance". My employee knew I was not serious.

3 Minutes later I heard a scream

Oh yes, the drill caught, spun the sheet metal and ripped open his hand.

I know others will disagree with me, but I have a PVC scoop and it works just fine in the wet sand. I made it out of 5mm PVC tubing I had lying around the property, and some PVC glue to keep it together. Works very well, the only thing that needs to be changed is the wooden handle, but the plastic scoop itself is going strong :)

What kind of sand do you have?

Is it like a sugar sand that does not compact?

Maybe it is volcanic with no silt in it?

Any pictures of the scoop and the sand?

I'm just curious. Here in Florida (east coast) even a aluminum sand needs a SS lip to cut in to the compacted sand.

Florida (west coast) has a sugar sand that does not erode because of less wave action on those beaches.

Well here is my free scoop LOL I made from junk and it looks it!
I made 7MM holes to catch earring studs and I was in chest deep and guess what I lost the earring stud went right through the hole when I went to grab it and I couldn't find it after LOL.
I did go through 2 drill bits only cost in the project.
I also had to use a MIG with .030 wire no gas so trying to weld the sheet is a pain never mind using old metal.
But it works and I know a few of you probably laughed when I posted and will probably laugh at the pics but it works for now hehehehe.
I am looking at making it lighter so maybe drilling more holes out of the handle to help with that.

Green-meanie, thanx for sharing the pix of yours. You must be quite the welder and metal-fab professional !

It's true that some small earrings, charms, etc.... won't pass through those holes. Versus the standard sand scoop size openings/mesh. However, the amount of agitation it's going to take to get the scan through your smaller holes, will begin to get tedious.

Perhaps for locations where you dip your scoop under water, and the water helps the sand through the holes. But for inter-tidal wet sand sifting , away from the water's edge, I can only imagine the extra muscle it's going to need, to shake all the sand through your smaller holes.

99% of the targets we seek are caught by the standard baskets. The holes are designed to catch 1/2-dime size and up, for instance. But there are 1% of the desirable targets that fall through, forcing a guy to his knees to finger through the tailings trying to get it.

I knew a guy who saw a one dollar gold piece fall through his scoop. He scooped again, got it, and shook it out again. And again he saw it fall through. The 3rd time he attempted to get it and shake out the sand, he got caught in an ebbing wave that had rolled up around his feet. When that roiling water receded, it must have caught the coin, and rolled it back out into the surf. He could never find it again . Aarrgghh.

You are correct lifting the scoop with a full bucket of sand did stink and the sand didn't drain as quick as I thought it would in the water.
Maybe I will have to buy a few more bigger drill bits in the future lol.
Or better yet maybe I will invest in a real scoop down the road this was made to see if I could do it after my POST lol.

When in the water, like Tom said, try use the water to help you clear out the sand. When on the beach slope, watch the waves and how far they come up, then do a quick scan of the beach infront of you, dump out the scoop and spread it a bit with your foot. Then scan with the detector again. Once you get used to that procedure its not too bad. Just make sure the sand is clean of a target before you dump out the scoop :)

Pretty impressive metal work though
