Better Half found this in the yard of an early 1900's house.

Any ideas as to its significance?

EDIT: For some reason the photo of the back won't post - it's a pin back.

Yup, nice quick ID Jack... those military unit crests with their little mottos are well documented and easy to get. That link Jack provided makes it sound like they are not around anymore, but it looks like a modern crest that would go in the blue field of a black beret.

Pin back makes it pre-1936. Nice find and quick ID.

If you are interested it's official military name is Distinguished Unit Insignia or DUI. Early ones are pin back or screw back and prior to WW2 they went to clutch backs. 1,000's of different ones. It's a good find and still looks in good shape.

You are right, I screwed up. Screw backs stopped in 1936 except for some theater made DUI's and collar discs and after WW2 pin backs and clutch backs started coming in.
