Maybe an iron spear head used for trade with the indian tribes? There was a time when encroaching europeans were of an iron age culture and the locals were still stone age, so, Iron was a huge item in trade value, just a guess, assuming it's iron.

Need some info on the state/ country your in to narrow things down a bit.
What part of Jefferson county, N.Y do you not understand?? I'd like to see it next to a ruler for size reference.

Cool find, I would use a real good magnifying glass to look for any signs of it's age/origin etc. I wouldn't clean or buff it, at least not much cleaning. Though most American Indians used stone, many did use metal too if they could trade for it or find it along trails the white man used. It'll look good on display.
