Waterproofed a compadre about 6 months ago.
It's a freshwater treasure magnet.
Thanks to the other posts for tips and insight.
Made an overview video if you want to check it out.
Hope it inspires you all to build something fun.
Thanks and happy hunting.

How well does it work in creeks? My understanding was that you need a detector that can ground balance for wet sandy areas.

Im in central Florida and the preset ground balance works fine in the spots I've used it. Mostly sandy bottom lakes and a rivers. Only time I ever have any falsing is right at the edge of the water. When the coil goes from air to water or water to air it will false. Think that's a conductivity thing but I'm not sure.

Looks good! Enough room left in the box for a sammich? :p

You have to add any ballast in the shaft to keep in from floating?

Definitely room for a pack of cheese crackers!

Haven't added any weight to it.
If you put it in the water the case floats barely out of the water
and the coil will be a foot or so deep.

Wet, Sandy SALTWATER areas.

I've had my other compadre at the beach before I did this one.
Not usable in the water but in the wet sand it will work surprisingly.
You have to turn the disc almost to nickel to get it to quiet down,
but it will still find coins to 4-5". My friends has the 8" coil and it needs the disc to be past nickel to run stable. The small coil sees less ground and isn't as noisy I guess. Either requires a slow and very steady sweep speed.
Not ideal by any means but it will work.

Since I got my Mojave I was wondering what to do with my well loved older 7" coil Compadre.
Should I keep it for guests, should I sell it...I don't plan on using it much anymore since I got the big M which works much better in my soil.
Then I saw this thread....a lightbulb appeared above my head!
Why, convert it into a water machine like you did.

Thanks for the idea and the tips in the video, they are appreciated and will be utilized in the future.

It's a nice machine for fresh water and rivers!

I now khouse has one and one other long ago on here (machineman) and I think even another longer back...hullguitars, and cellerdwllr waterproofed a tracker iv.

Mine's named Gold Siren.

I have to thank all you guys who posted your builds.
I read every thread I could find before I did mine!

I like the golden siren label!
Been wanting to make a label/sticker for mine.
I call it the SS Minnow but fortunately it's
still going strong and hasn't turned into a shipwreck

One of my boats is named the "Three Hour Tour"

Call it what you wish, but "Gold Siren" just sounds like something a real genius might come up with..:D

How hard is the disc. knob to turn??????
If it is easy you could glue a strong flat bar magnet to the top of it inside and control the knob with an equally strong magnet from the outside.
The inside magnet would have to close but not touching the plastic top.
Keep the outside magnet in your pocket until you need it.

I am new to this, so I only really need ground balance for saltwater areas? I only have very basic detectors and was considering upgrading to a detector with ground balance in the future, but if I dont really need it then perhaps I can budget for a cheaper detector.

Depends how mineralized your dirt is. Some places you will definitely get better performance/depth with manual ground balance or a detector with ground tracking.

In wet salt sand or salt water in general you're best bet is a multi frequency or pulse induction machine.

Most machines can do okay in the dirt, it is when you get near/in salt water that the equipment list gets very short and expensive...
