They may want to check into FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF STATE v. TREASURE SALVORS, INC., ET AL. It went all the way to the US Supreme Court. While the differences are obvious, land vs open water, there may be some precedent. Probably the issues would be similar, whether sections of the Antiquities Act or of the Abandoned Property Act are applicable.

Wow...you find something and you cant dig it, imagine if that happened in staffordshire in england, that roman horde would never have been found or would have been ransacked sometime at midnight by the vulture detecters

Can someone tell me what federal law they are referring to in the story?

Also, whose land is it and why do they have to vacate it?

Thanks!

Here is a link that explains a bit more than the local news did.

http://www.endeavornews.com/news/200..._page/001.html

It is on state forest lands and it is stated by PA law that historical objects that are removed have to be turned into the state. Same for our state game lands and state parks.

If they were on state lands, these guys should have known going in that they wouldnt be able to dig anything up. I dont see what the big surprise is now that they think they found something. What did they think was going to happen?

Exactly. They aren't making themselves look good, by not knowing the rules or by expecting the rules to change for them.

Default gold

The government changes rules in the case of mining and salvage all the time when they're in it's own favour. It won't ruin a park to dig a test hole and fill it back in. Rest assured that if they told someone the location, it will be dug legally or not. The park will need 24/7 security to prevent it.

In the end it's always better to just dig it up and move on. They've probably dug larger sewage pits for the outhouses in the same park. Geez.

I have a couple problems with the Finders Keepers guys. For one since when do you go onto property not owned by you and claim it. 2 I hope the State fines them for leaving rubbish (cameras) for each one they have there. 3 No wonder DCNR has laws preventing people from digging on State Forest ground...These guys are total idiots to me. I hope the State digs it, but I still have high doubts its even where Finders Keepers says it is. They are stretching every option they have to stay there.

did ya read the whole thread they have on Tnet, this story has been a long draw out story for many years now. they get close ta finding something and then the winter sets in shutting them down or some other problems arise.......the best was in november when someone went on the site and dug down 10 ft and stole some of the treasure.....now theres more drama.....if ya ask me that treasure was found years ago by someone with enough sense not ta say anything about it.

The way I understand the story is the gold is stolen Federal property from a shipment on it's way to the U.S. Mint. If these guys really did find it then they should receive a substantial finders fee.

Taking the gold and not telling anyone wouldn't be some kind of "found property" gray area, it's public property sitting on public property. It would be like finding a stolen parking meter with a clearly marked property tag and taking it home.
