I think you are on the right trail. I believe it's a fancy cook stove "trivit" that is used for slow cooking. You'd put your dutch oven on this ring to lower/even the temperature and still be able to crank up the stove when it's cold outside. Cook stoves can crank up the heat when loaded and roaring. They also used them to set the skillet on the table without scorching it.
