I don't hear lead finds being mentioned much on here,
does anyone find any ?
Here in the UK, we tend to find a lot. This is often fairly modern scrap,
but we do find lots of lead weights, lead buttons, tokens, pot mends etc.

It is very difficult to date finds though, as being a versatile material, it's
been used for hundreds of years.

Alan, We find lead mostly in fishing weights around beaches and streams. The lead weight is fast becoming a dinasaur here. It will be outlawed for fishing in the next couple years and go the way of lead shot for hunting.

As far as other lead objects yes they turn up frequently. I found a parially used "pig" or small ingot buried in about a foot of sand. I think it was material used in body shop repair back in the forties. Battery plates turn up once in a while but not often. I usually dump it..

I find lead all the time, even places you wouldn't normally expect it to be. Almost always fishing weights.

This is a lead pot mend. They were in use from the Roman period onwards.
They did what they say, and were used to plug a hole in a clay pot.
sometimes like with this example, they still have part of the pot intact.
This measures about 1.5" square

They are a fairly common find, and like all lead, give a really good signal.

I've found my share of lead fishing weights, but the really neat finds are the musket balls from the American Revolution activities in my area. I have one spot that has yielded Uniform buttons, musket balls, and King George coins.

Yup, I find lead all the time. Kind of a pain when you come across it. Mostly fish sinkers, but once in a while I come across a wheel weight or two.
