Found a union round eagle breast(belt) plate a couple of weeks ago and have yet to attempt to clean it. The brass has a definite thick green patina. Any suggestions on how not to damage the piece but clean it up as good as possible. My best find to date so I feel very timid about messing with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would have a tough time bringing myself to use anything but a tooth brush, soap and water on a find like that ironsights !!!

How about the ole potato method? Sometimes I`ll get that green stuff off any wheaties I might find by sticking them in half a potato overnight. I would think it would work on brass too.
