My hunting partner and I have found spot where we have found several musket and minie balls. On most recent hunt i was shocked to find a minie ball on the surface of ground. Upon washing the dirt out of base at home I was surprised to find it had what resembles a cross in it. It wasnt easy to take pics of but I tried several ways. Please let me know if you have seen this before and what was going on with it. Thanks

Nice find.. I have only found 2 just lying on the ground.. both were in a field I was about to disk up.. why do you think this one was on the surface??

Just up the road from you in Macon County, TN! Heck, I worked at the Petco there in Lebanon last year!

Congrat's on the minie! HH

The cavity markings on the miniball are "swage marks" where the bullet has been sized after casting.
That specific marking on civil war bullets is listed in the McKee & Mason book on Civil War Projectiles as cavity type 17.
I don't think they are ultra rare, but they don't show up everywhere. It is a Yankee bullet, 58 cal. Nice find!

I really dont know it was found in a wooded area. I have wondered but havent come up with any idea why it was on surface.
