I am looking at some lower price detectors for my grandson to detect with. I am looking at the Compadre or the Silver U Max. Would one of these be a good starter?

Either one would be a good starter. Not only are either one starters, they are very good detectors. So many of us have the compadre because of how good it is on small gold items. Very light weight. one 9 volt battery that will last many hours and a life time warrenty. You just can not go wrong. I use both of them all the time.. Good luck and have a good time. Also, welcome to the Church of the Compadre. Read that story. It is fun. Let us know what you get. ... KEN
