I found this post hurricane Sandy on Coney island beach before sand replenishment.. I stepped onto the beach and tried to balance my Sovereign Gt..big iron..moved and got balanced and headed for the low tide..but for some reason I turned around and went back to the big iron target.. about 18" down I saw roundness and thought I had myself a cannon ball..but it was just upsidedown..
It appears to be a large ladle minus the handle..broken but repurposed for a tar bucket..in the tar is the remnants of thin metal..a trowel perhaps..putty knife like tool..there are also wood splinters visible...you can see a splinter in the pic with the lead grapeshot..
Lead grapeshot began around 1650 but was soon replaced by iron... In researching the limited lead grapeshot pics online it seems to match..
The tar bucket matches carpentry repair tricks for old wooden ship hulls...it sat in the sun in my truck and the tar actually started to melt..you can see the shiny blobs..
