This is my 2nd large cent, both doing this past winter. There first one is roasted. This one much better, but not perfect. Can't read the date although something I think I see some numbers.

I'll try some more pics later and play with the lighting.

Can anyone make out a diagnostic detail from the obverse here?

It looks to me to be a Coronet (1815-1857) because I think I can see some stars above her head. The Classic Head (1808-1814) had no stars above the bust.

I agree about the stars. They are a little hard to make out above her head but there is certainly room for them there whereas there isn't such room on the coins with no stars above the head.

Use a little face grease. Rub your thumb in the crevasse on the side of your nose and rub it on the coin. Really helps bring out details.

Looks like a matron to me too.
Look at the "double-chin" area and hair bun on the back of the head.

The one you posted a photo of. A toothpick does an awesome job, but takes a lot of time and patience
I'm pretty sure I cleaned this one up best I could after I found it. I may have used a toothpick. Not sure.

What is the toothpick methods supposed to do? Remove dirt? Crusties?

I started in on it with a toothpick but fear I'm removing the patina. I believe I see bare copper near the bottom.

Image shows area I worked on in red. Possible bare copper by yellow arrow.

Sometimes these are just too far gone to fully ID and there is nothing you can do.

This LC looks to be one that will not clean up and show more detail.
So best to just leave it as is and enjoy having an LC.

I think maybe I seen a date of 1818, well the right hand 18 anyway but don't rely on my statement. Congrats.
