I'm new at this hobby and have a question about ground balancing. What are the differences (advantages/disadvantages) between automatic, manual, and fixed. Why would you want one or more ground balancing options in a detector?

A properly ground balanced detector will find deeper targets everything else being equal. Also, it may be less prone to falsing depending on which way it's off balance.

In a fixed or preset machine, the factory ground balance point may be significantly off the true ground balance for the place you are in.

A manual ground balance machine lets you manually tweak the balance point for the most accurate ground balance possible. But you may soon grow weary of stopping to check if you are still in balance, or doing it frequently enough when ground conditions changes relatively fast.

Automatic ground balance machines have the detector "self-check" the ground balance while you are hunting. This is typically the best situation. But, you will typically want to have a "ground balance lock" switch to keep it from automatically ground balancing when you don't want it to.
