The woman kissed by an ecstatic sailor in Times Square celebrating the end of World War II has died.

Greta Zimmer Friedman’s son says his mother died Thursday at a Richmond, Virginia, hospital of what he called complications from old age. She was 92.

Friedman was a 21-year-old dental assistant in a nurse’s uniform on Aug. 14, 1945. She went to Times Square amid reports that the war had ended. That’s when she was kissed by George Mendonsa celebrating Japan’s surrender.

Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured the moment. It became one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century.

Something tells me that the sailor died recently also??

The sailor's identity has been in question for a long time. Many sailors came forward, but "experts" have boiled it down to two candidates. George Mendonsa was one of the sailors, the other was Glenn McDuffie. Alas, they are both now deceased so we may never know who it actually was.

George Mendonsa, of Rhode Island, even sued Life. A team of volunteers from the Naval War College used 3-D face scanning technology to conclude he was the real deal.

McDuffie claimed that he was the man in the iconic World War II picture. He was backed up by a police forensic artist who said she matched his facial structure.

Can you imagine what would happen now to a man who just grabbed a woman and gave her a big kiss? He'd be labeled a sex offender and pay for it the rest of his life. Back then it made them both famous.
