Interesting cartridge. Here is a link for some rimfire cartridges. I am guessing one of the Spenser cartridges. BUT probably wrong!!

Turtlefoot beat me to it. It appears to be the earliest version which was a bar primed. If there is an indentation about an 8th of the way up from the base it was Benet primed and made a tad bit later.

Those are great finds. Most are found smashed and that was a directive from the Secretary of War because the indians were finding a way to reload them. Soldiers were commanded to stomp on them.

Although not exact, the measurements are VERY close to a .50-70. I don't believe that it is a rim fire, but more likely a "center primed" casing.

Scroll down to the bit on .50-70 bullets.

It is a great find!
Doug

Thanks Doug
I think that's the one they look like they where hit in the middle
I knew they where some kind of rimfire but there where no mark's like a regular rim fire

Great info scuba
I doubt whoever dropped these was worried about Indians reloading the
They did have problems with indians out here but not much

Not a expert on cartridges, but I am with Turtlefoot. Appears to be a 50-70. Although 50-70 is center fire. I can't tell, are you certain the edge has been struck? Many times a soldier would pop open a fresh casing and dump the powder to start a fire. Could be what happened here?

Charlie

As you can see one of them has definitely been struck in the middle
