The threshold is adjustable so you could reduce it to where you can't hear it if you want to. But it's the way it is so you can tell when the detector has "nulled" over a discriminated item.

Yes, it's called the "threshold." When the hum stops you know that you are over an iron target or one that you have discriminated out. You can turn it down to where it doesn't bother you... you get use to it.
