Not very often do you find an item to learn later of within hours of when it was lost. The artillery hat pin is from the North Carolina 36th light artillery. After the fall of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865, next morning several nearby forts were evacuated. On this evacuation route I found this pin. This retreat was thru woods because the Cape Fear River was full of Union troops. The retreat was to Fort Anderson. The pin still has a nail thru the "6" that kept it from flopping.

Great find! Were the other three items found with it?

Hi, the N C button on the right was, the other 2 were not. There was a couple other NC Sunburst, 2 Confederate Infantry buttons and a Louisiana State Seal button found in the area. Thanks for looking

Awesome find! Love it. I also presume you did a little research in order to get this one. Seems like much of the known CW battlefields, camps and forts are (rightly) well protected, often specifically from detectorists, but the routes to and fro often are not. That's where research pays off. Let us know if you get anything else.
