think I found a privy ?

Whilst detectingvi dug a deep signal and noticed dark ask .
So I dug out a bunch of dirt roughly 2 feet deep.no glass yet .
Im wondering how woukd 8 have to dig befor I hit glass or before I hit the bottom of a privy if infact this is a privy .for all I know it could have just been a old fire pit .

We have a member in my club back in Kansas that not only hunts with detectors in dirt but specializes in privy digging, research, how to find them, where to dig.
He talked at one of our winter meetings, presented a lot of his bottles and other finds and it was fascinating.
He only digs with others, usually groups of 4 because this is a dangerous endeavour...some of these things go real deep as far as 10-15' or more even up to 25' to get down to all the good stuff.
You don't want to be digging a big hole by yourself and have a cave in which would probably not end well.
They could be brick lined, made of wood or just a big hole in the ground.

Yeah? I'd keep going until I hit undisturbed soil..nice and easy though, a guy would hate to crush a nice bottle by being too randy...maybe gently stab around with a thin probe to see if you could feel glass or define the edges..?.

You know, modern plumbing and trash pick up is a fairly modern concept, back in the day, folks dug holes to dispose of stuff, hell, burn barrels/ash pits are still used in places...so any old hole with disturbed dirt is worth a look..keep us posted...

I bought a privy probe awile back and wanted to get into it, as i have been digging bottles longer than I have been detecting but never got into it enough. Lots of treasures in those privies. Dig it up!
