Hanging up my detector, and picking up my camera

One of my recent photos. A Nuthatch.

Just found this thread, Alan. Some nice work !

And don't you just love it when someone sees a few really nice photos of yours and ignorantly asks... "Wow, your camera takes some nice pictures... what kind of camera do you use?" With no credit whatever to the skills of the photographer. It's like asking a surgeon "Wow, that scalpel hardly makes noticeable scars... what brand is it?" Sheesh !

Here's a couple birdie photos from Great Meadows in Concord, Mass I took last May (a Marsh Wren and a Red-winged Blackbird)

Lovely photos Jim, we don't get either of those birds here.
Thanks for posting them.

Thanks Alan... and we don’t get a lot of your UK birds here... except those darned Starlings which someone imported here many moons ago and are ubiquitous throughout now

Apart from wildlife, I like aviation photography. On Sunday (2nd June)
I went to Duxford to see DC-3s arriving for Wednesdays flight to Normandy,
to mark the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, where they intend to do a parachute
drop. Fingers crossed as the weather forecast is bad.

On Sunday there were twenty one DC-3s with more expected.

Nice photos Alan, thanks for sharing !

There seems to still be quite a few working DC-3s, I don't know, but I'm guessing they mostly use them for shows and to preserve history rather than everyday commercial use.

There are a few still working. I think Buffalo still have a couple flying in
Canada, although one was damaged a couple of weeks ago. If you look
at "Plane Savers" on YouTube, you can see one in the process of being
restored, which should be back in the air this week.

There is also a company which rebuilds them, fitting turbo prop engines.

Interesting, I imagine the restoration isn't cheap as I would think spare parts are not plentiful.

Was this the company in Ohio? The owner (I think) recently crashed one and died.... [emoji37]

Sorry, I don't know about the owner. The company that does the upgrades
is still going I believe.

Most parts can be made now. One of the reasons for doing the engine
changes, is due to the non availability of the fuel needed for the old P&W
radial engines in some remote areas..

D-Day

Last Sunday, 2nd June, we went to Duxford to see the gathering of DC-3s,
preparing for their trip to Normandy on the 5th, for a parachute drop. It was
a great day, to see so many of these aircraft in one place, about twenty four
I believe. I was then lucky enough to see them fly over on their way to France.

Happy Christmas

Here's wishing everyone a Happy Christmas, and hoping you make lots of great finds in 2020.

Although I don't go out detecting any more, I still enjoy looking at the finds you are making, in the US and around the world.

I also love looking at the photographs you are taking, that being my primary hobby now.

Best wishes ... Alan
