If you were visiting the UK...... or to be more precise, England and possibly Southern Scotland.

A friend of mine is organising a tour for a small group of American people he knows, for next year.
He has different ideas to me, as to the sort of places people would like to see.

If you were coming to England for two weeks, what would be on your list of things to see, towns to visit etc.

I'd be interested in the old castles and churches. Maybe Ashebury and the whole 'Camelot' theme. That would be a dream visit for me. : )

London theatre district, The Tower of London, Land's End, Cirencester, York, the Yorkshire Dales (perhaps to the village where James Herriott/Alf Wight worked for so many years), Blackpool, Chester, Sweetheart Abbey, The Lake Country, Loch Ness, Croy Brae hill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Brae), Harlech Castle, Edinburgh, gads you're making me recall all the places my family went back in the 1980's when I was a kid...

Here is a large list of Scottish Castles, with pics, and historical blurbs about each. It might help in the selection of places. http://www.rampantscotland.com/castles/blcastles_index.htm

Don't forget Wales..http://www.castlewales.com/

Thanks for the brief trip down memory lane...

Thanks for the suggestions so far, but I think they will only be here for a couple of weeks, not a month .

Most people want to see London for a couple of days, then perhaps go as far
north as Edinburgh (I would imagine).
With perhaps Stonehenge, , Hadrians Wall, York, a couple of old castles and Abbeys.
Taking in some TV and film locations. Alnwick castle for instance, for Harry
Potter fans ...etc.

It's difficult I know.
A lot of British people visit the US, and only get as far as Florida. Saying that,
the US is a tiny bit bigger than the UK :)

Sweethart Abbey brings back memories, from a holiday in Scotland in 1986.
My mother was formerly a Stewart, and they have a family plot there.
So we stopped to pay our respects. Her late father lived at nearby Shambellie House for a while.

Possibly some WW2 historic sites. Air fields, gun emplacements, stuff like that. But that's just me. I find that stuff very interesting.

Same here. Anything memorializing the Battle of Britain. Planes, aircraft museums, pilot history, like that..

OT

What about a ferry trip to the lsle of Man?,Carlisle was a nice place.I've been to most of the places you listed all were great. What about Endinburgh castle?will they be going around the time of the miltary tatoo?,I saw that on one of my trips there .It was amazing, had a hard tiime getting a taxi back to my hotel:lol:.And of course I enjoyed the pubs and fish and chip shops.

The fish & chips in Scotland is much better than in England. The area around the Firth of Clyde is beautiful to see and tour. I recommend a few old castles. RickO

Ah, but you didn't specify a length of stay initially! ;)
I was just thinking of the places I remembered going and enjoying from my 2 trips to the UK. Now, that said, both trips were approximately 4 wks in length each...Plus I was trying to think of various places in all different parts of the UK, so that no matter where the tour went, I might have a suggestion near by...

Sounds lovely--wish it was back in the 1980's again so I could go back to visit.

1. Stonehenge
2. Epworth
3. Lindisfarne Monastery
4. Durward Street, London
5. Alton Towers
6. Druid's Altar (Yorkshire)
7. Comb Scar, Malham (Yorkshire)
8. Actually, just about any of the ancient sites at Yorkshire

My grandmother was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne and came over here when she was a little girl. That would be neat for me personally. And the British history in general. Good question.
