I have acquired 9 coin's from 1943. Due to someone's neglegance in proper care they spraypainted them silver. I am thinking of using Xylene (a paint thinner) or using brake fluid(Dot #3). I have been told that these will work. I would like your opinion's on cleaning. David

I think either method should work and work well. Just be sure to get the paint removal agent completely off before sticking them into your collection. If you get that stuff in with the rest of your coins it'll be a real pain getting that all cleaned up (been there, done that).

Try any paint thinner or acetone. These compouds are inert as far as affecting metal. After the paint is softened / removed, simply wash off with soap and water. Use olive oil after the wash since they are steel pennies and can rust.

All the above will work just fine. I have used carberator cleaner for removing paint as it won't harm metal.
