I went to a local (well beaten) site that is known for giving up Civil war artifacts. There are a number of houses on the property that were built post Civil War and I started my day working the front yard of one of them.
After a dozen or so pull tabs I dug this 1943 War Nickel. My first.
I moved to one of the other houses on the property and dug this spoon. Unfortunately the handle is broken off so there's no getting any sort of maker's mark off of it but the patina and the sweet ring when it's dropped on a wooden table makes me believe it's silver. I'll have to wait till I invest in a test kit to make sure.
UPDATE: I'm a dumba**. A friend pointed out that silver coins don't come out looking like the spoon.
It's plated something. Still no idea...
I left that site and went by my Grandparent's place. It's not in the family anymore but I've been hunting it for a few weeks now.
The first find at that site was a token. When I first uncovered it all I could see was the bottom edge of the shield. For just a second I got a little excited then I turned it over.
I also found this little piece of kiddie jewelry. It's thin stamped metal and has 3 of the original 4 little glass beads still intact. My mother was one of 4 daughters raised on the property and I have a sister and a female cousin so I have email out asking if anyone recognizes it.
I also found this odd little item. When I found it I almost threw it into my scrap pouch but I caught a little flash of light. It appears to have a single small (barely bigger than the head of a pin) bead in it. It looks like an eye looking at you. I can't make out enough detail to even begin to guess what it may be. I'm got it in an olive oil bath right now so we'll see what crud comes off and what whatever is left looks like.
I ought to put it in the "Help To ID My Finds" forum but I figure folks can not have a clue here just as easily.
