Carved Bullets

I do know of one example where it is thought that the carving may have been to better the projectile. That would be the famous Whittled Whitworths. There's a great article on that theory here:

Super! Thank you for sharing. That is an awesome article, and with great pictures!! This is what I was thinking in the first place. Them farm boys were ingenious and I'm sure that getting the maximum distance out of their rounds were of primary concern. Thank you for sharing!!
 
Holy Cow! Is that sort of a lead equivalent of silly puddy pressed to comic strip? Did they pour molten lead over a real coin? Seems way too exact and detailed to be a carving..... :shock:

I was thinking the same...had to have poured over a real coin. The date is backwards. I don't think they would have been able to "pound" it in, so the molten lead makes the most sense.
