Where to md in south n.j

Hello i want to take my son metal detecting in South Jersey where is it legal to do so other than the beach. I dont want to be embarressed or fined for going to the wrong area. Where could i go? Its so confusing trying to find out on the internet. Thanks very much for your replies...
