You can get an inexpensive power inverter from Amazon for $16.98 and free (Prime shipping)

I don't know the amperage that a charger for a metal detector puts but I suspect that it is far less than what the weakest car charger puts out. I suspect that a car charger would burn up an Etrex battery in a very short period of time. We are talking milliamps with the detector charger and AMPS with the car charger.
