Cleaning Detector

You might try to softly steel wool the shafts clean, to clear any debris that's on them before sticking them back together. Try spaying some WD-40 where the two halves come together. I use PB Blaster myself because it cuts through all the rust and grime when I clean and reset my shafts after a month using my MD in the sand and salt.

They seem to work apart easier with just a little lube....

I tried using reel oil. I'm not sure that was the best but I was trying to get it apart. I will try what you said to use.
