If the school is unable to help there doesn't seem to be much to do.

If they are simply unwilling there is hope. If it is a recent graduate, opposting on a local school related website, or on campus could lead to a current student with some knowledge of the owner. There's also the ring manufacturer, who may have records. Each ring is usually customized.
