I'm new to this forum but I've been detecting here on Long Island for years. While detecting on a friends farm yesterday, I found a large cent that has been cut into an odd shape? Could this have been done during manufacturing. The inside cuts are exactly the same size as the ourside of the large cent. Any ideas?

I believe that alot of large cents were modified in later years as household tools, replacement parts and ornaments. Nice find! Is the date still intact or legible?

I don't know why that was "created", LIF, but it would be high on my favorites list.

That's what I think also. It appears to be what they call a Coronet which is from 1816-1839. The site is being pretty productive with alot of flat buttons, a home made button mold, miscellaneous coins and bullets. My brother went yesterday and found a nice War of 1812 Button.
