Federal Government Shut Down Go Now

I’m sort of confused with all of this...

I mean, does this mean that any non-citizen called walk across the Mexican border since there won’t be a federal agent there? Does this mean that if I were still in the military and decided to go AWOL that I won’t get disciplined for leaving without permission? Like others have stated, we can grab our machines and it’s a free for all? It just seems funny to me that the government is on a “shutdown” but I saw a couple of Jeeps delivering mail today.

USPS is considered “essential”, don’t ask me why. I’m working today unfortunately. Plus, we’re not actually connected to gov’t anymore, besides being considered “federal” employees. We’re self funded.

The White House just did a pretty in-depth press conference on exactly what will be funded and what this will affect going forward days or weeks from today. Check out youtube for it. Many agencies have bloated budgets so they can run on “reserves” for awhile as gov’t was already preparing for this.

Depending on which source you hear, you’ll get 1,000 different answers. This source from the shutdown in 2013, has a pretty good percentage breakdown by dept of what the current shutdown will probably entail also: https://www.google.com/amp/abcnews.go.com/amp/Politics/government-shutdown-numbers/story?id=20424204

Just for informational purposes, not trying to promote propaganda.

This statement here is exactly why I’m a “go with the flow” type of person.

I hear ya. The media pretty much blows everything like this out of proportion anyways, it gives them something to talk about. It’s not unique and actually built into the process for the reason of being a bargaining chip. It’s all politics.

That brings up something else, why all of a sudden is everyone calling it “fake news”? When I was a student in school we learned that it was called “yellow journalism”. The media has been this way for years, nothing will ever change with the media blowing things way out of proportion. It’s the same as a tabloid newspaper, if the story will sell than tell it like you want to.

There’s not much real news anymore, most is opinion pieces or editorials. You no longer hear both sides and get to make up your own mind, they want you to believe like they do, hence it’s not real news or is “fake news”. And the news cycle is so fast now even when the media get the story wrong there is hardly ever a retraction of mistake or misspoke. Other times they just lie, both sides.

Excellent post. NOT that we won't learn truths from the news, but : The way news is told (to be a good sell for ratings) has to be kept in mind. Like .... people can spin together 10 un-deniable truths (names, dates, etc...) to conclude in a certain favored implied intended conclusion.

There’s not much real news anymore, most is opinion pieces or editorials....

Also keep in mind the human tendency to believe and pay attention to BAD news, not GOOD news. No one pays the slightest mind to good news. So ... for example: If someone came up to you and told you that your mutual friend Bob won the $1,000,000 lottery, you'd say "no way, I don't believe it". But if someone came up to you and said "the police just arrested Bob for embezzling $1,000,000 from his company", you'd say "really? wow. How could Bob do such a thing ?"

So too is it with the news: Only bad news sells. If there are 10 clues that a congressman WASN'T stealing (or seeing an escort call girl on government paid trips), those news stories will never make the the nightly news. Only the single story that purports he stole or was seeing a call girl.

Thanks Tom!

Often times it’s not what they do tell you, but what they don’t (or omit) on purpose. Like “oh it’s so horrible that the man at the zoo was attacked by that lion” leaving out that for the hour before that he was antagonizing it by throwing rocks at it or waving a huge juicy steak in it’s face. Those details count.

No, those details don't count. He should still sue the zoo. Because the zoo failed to have a sign warning: "do not wave steaks in front of the lion" And as far as it concerns the news: The only part of the captured video that's spell-binding to watch, is where he's attacked by the lion. Can you imagine how boring it would be , to see the preceding hour of where he waved the steak ?

I just finished listening to over an hour of the Senate filabuster, so waving a steak would be quite entertaining right now in contrast. Our gov’t is so archaic but there is a certain nostalgia about democracy in action, or inaction in this case.

The sad part is all those "non essential" employees that don't have to report to work will get full back pay when they return to work so essentially we will pay all government employees NOT to work for how ever long it lasts this go round. Pretty good gig for them.

Correctomundo. No one working for the federal government is going to lose a cent. Also, they don't just abandon everything. There are people keeping an eye on things.

"Government shutdown", my backside! Dollar to a donut those "elected representatives" are still getting their paycheck.:mad:

Roger

Military troops are getting shot / injured / killed but not getting a pay check

Congress who let this happen ARE still getting a pay check........

Something really stinks about this situation.........
