Old filter of some sort?

Went beach hunting for a couple of hours this morning and found this interesting item in the sand. From what I can make out on the very worn labeling, it says the following:

Magnatrap
CAR fil TER
5/16 F28255
Power Center

One side says in and the other side says out to indicate flow.

Ive searched online for a bit and did not find any information on it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Looks like an inline fuel filter. At least that's my guess.

I find filters and coils all the time underwater. Yes a filter for gas used in a boat probably. changed at sea and given a watery burial.
