Went to an old homestead yesterday. This was really the only decent find I pulled out. A friend found a nice 3 ringer.

It's definitely thin. I was told via another form that is was a model 1874 officers buckle that was missing the back part. By itself there is no way it is strong enough to be a buckle. There was definitely nothing else around it or in the hole.

I like it either way. Does anyone know if they were made in two pieces.

Some of the pictures online seem really thick and some have the same appearance. But pictures are hard to judge.
 
Hey, the buckle looks nice once it's all cleaned up. It's much easier to see the detail now. I wasn't sure exactly what it was since it was so thin.

Here's a pic of the bullet to go with it from the same site. Penny is for size reference only. Obviously the button and dish piece aren't metal, but they looked really old.
