Default Need some help with this one

Found this in area with late 1800-early teens items. I'm guessing there was a matching "foot" like the one i broke off. Any help is much appreciated...

hard to tell from the pic, but is that piece flat? looks to me like a piece of trunk hardware, possibly the hinge, the latch or from the leather handles that were used on old trunks.
