Digging in January

I got a call from my neighbor yesterday. He said, “Well hunting season is over. Do you want to go digging tomorrow?” He has access to some very good sites connected to the Battle of Chancellorsville. We had a pretty good day. I was lucky enough to get a decent haul of lead. Some 3 ringers, a Sharps carbine and some pistol bullets. The one fired bullet is interesting to me. It is the first fired Swage bullet I have dug. Another friend with us dug another 7 bullets, one of which was a confederate 2 ringer. I wish I had gotten a picture of it but my friend was in a hurry to get home—-he did have an hour and a half drive. Oh well.... Anyway we had a decent day of digging, especially considering it is January.

Nice variety of lead REB. All I ever find around here are union 3 ringers and even they are hard to come by. The coastal area here where I live was occupied by Union soldiers for the entire war because of it's strategic location at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. There were a few skirmishes here but no major battles....

This farm we are on is almost 700 acres. It was occupied by the Confederate army first, and then the Union army. The plantation house, built in the early 1800's, is still there. It is interesting in that in one field of about 40 acres, we have found 100 or more of many different variants of the Sharps carbine bullets, so we kinda think that field had the cavalry in it. In the adjoining field, separated by a grove of trees, we found many many 3 ringers and other different bullets, including some Confederate ones. This field is about 100 acres in size and we guess that the infantry might have been camped on this one. I really feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to visit such places.

Congrats buddy , love the fired sledge I have dug those back home in Va. but not a fired one . It is for sure has the cool factor to it. Love it
