I’ve actually found a few of these and always wondered what these are? Other than a metallic dog turd, I have no ideas.

Any ideas?

are the ends hollow? or maybe have copper or something in them? To me it looks like the things they splice power/phone/telegraph lines with

Looks exactly like the splicer I have found one as well...
