Probably most of you know this already but I have found that Bing.com has a mode called Bird's Eye view that consists of stitched together aerial photos. In many cases they are clearer than Google Earth. The main advantage is that, at least in the NE US, Google Earth usually shows terrain with leaves on the trees. Bing usually shows without leaves which can reveal old roads, trails, cellar holes, foundations, pits, small streams, etc.
It's probably best to locate an area with topos and Google Earth and then switch over to Bing to narrow down a few spots.
