Got out to find the fields had officially frozen today. Figured I'd try an old foundation site with some ground cover that might be diggable. It was, but I was having trouble finding much in all the iron.... Came across what turned out to be a broken jar top sticking out of the soil. After I dug it out, I found something glass and red under it. That turned out to be a very old tail light. Found a big old glass round thing (which I think is a headlight lense) nearby with a patent date from the teens... figured what the heck, let's start digging! Turns out to be a rather excellent dump right next to the foundation. Spent the rest of my time excavating... Doesn't take much to entertain me, and I found quite a few bottles that I'm gonna keep. Pulled out everything that caught my eye. Old car pieces, tons of shoe leather, broken glass, broken ceramic....found a nice old marble and some other doo-dads. A 1931 dog license with some of the leather collar still attached (loved THAT!) dates the site a bit.

Also, I was sifting through some of the dirt I'd piled up and found this....rock. Definitely not natural... I'm thinking I may have found my first native artifact! But...why would it be in a 30's dump?? Maybe was just in the soil they covered it with? Dunno….

Going back tomorrow to continue the excavation. Low of 24 tonight so I hope it doesn't freeze the ground too badly there.....

Nice! If that rock had the beginnings of a bevel ground on either side I'd say axe head. But probably what SoOregonMd said.

A dump like that would entertain me for a while too. Cool dog tag find! I think that stone is a pestle. Worn to a point on the business end; it was well used. The clear lens reminds me of a tractor light lens. Cool digs!
Good thing you put away the detector, and broke out the mattock instead.

Nice! I could spend a lot of time there and never get bored. I love it! I agree with SoOregonMd, looks like a pestle.

The dog tag is on the top of my list to find right now. Nice find!

The stone is an Indian artifact. Not a pestle but a tool called a celt. The sharper edge gives it away. Pestles tended to be more rounded. It is basically a hand ax/scraper. Google images bring up many similar looking ones. Awesome find!

Cool stuff. I always liked old bottles. Wish I would have kept the old ones I found when I was a kid.

Great finds.
The rectangle bottle in the figures looks Art Nouveau and fits the time frame of other items. I like that one best.

Thanks! I had to look up mattock; never heard that one before...

I googled and I agree. Thank you! (I love dog licenses too, have been pretty lucky this year in that respect..)
