I got one of the knockoff GP pinpointers yesterday and just to check it out decided to hunt along a curb strip by my work. After a few trash hits got a signal that was still strong when I turned up the discrimination. Saw it in the hole and thought it was wadded up can slaw - which might have been more attractive. As a newbie i know nothing about identifying metal, was hoping silver but washed it off and no markings. The ring overall has a kind of crude look like it was handmade or maybe just poorly made Any thoughts? Pewter? It's still Precious to me :)

Could be silver, it also could be a jewelry casting project from school or a class which might explain it's, unique-ness let's say... It's kinda got the silver look though at least judging from the pics.

I know a guy at a pawn shop who will probably test it for me if there's a chance...

SWEET ring!!!! It has some weight to it so I'd say it's silver - if it didn't I'd say aluminum. Did the ground look like it's untouched? If so it's been in the ground for a while which again points to silver....

Nice hunt!!

Nice hunt!!

It may have been there a while, it was actually not on the city side of the walk, but it's my workplace so i have the okay to hunt it if i dig carefully. Have been waiting till the grass is done but couldn't resist a pinpointer test today :)

Nice ring! Looks silver to me.

lay a sheet of aluminum foil on the table, put the ring on it, SPIT on the ring (saliva only) and wrap the foil around it, rubbing the spit on the metal. Wrap tightly. Let it sit for 30 seconds, and open it back up and SMELL it.

If it's anything other than silver, it'll just smell like nothing (or your spit, if you have Ranch dressing, LOL) If it's silver, it'll smell NASTY... like rotten egg nasty.

you can try this with a known silver piece, if you'd like to prove it works.

I use this as a field test for possible silver (foil gum wrappers work great). Works like a charm.

Be aware a PLATED silver item will stink, too. But this doesn't look plated.

Cheers,

Skippy

Skippy, that was great info, and really fun to read!! Gonna try it!

I'm going to have to guess silver as well. Sure has the look of it. Probably handmade. I know a guy near me who buys scrap silver and gold o make his own jewelry as a hobby. Could be something like that.

It's the weirdest trick I know. The saliva and aluminum react with the silver to create sulfides, which is where the smell comes from. It'll make you gag sometimes. LOL

My pawn shop guy tested it and it's silver (still going to try the Skippy test for experience!). Dumb luck that my first ring wasn't total junk!

Based on the over 500 rings I've found, you have an 7% chance of it being gold, and an 15% chance of it silver. :) Not dumb luck at all. Just about the roll of a die for a silver.

In fact, I find far less tungsten than I do gold, and even less titaniums... and only ONE platinum ring. Junk rings, of course, account for almost 70% of my haul.

This, of course, takes into account ALL locations of land hunting, in public places (schools, parks, sports fields). Private land will be different.

and congrats on a half-ounce of silver! That's AWESOME! (it also constitutes a "honker" being over 10 grams.)

Cheers!

Thanks, folks! It's encouraging, especially after I had not so great results with a test garden the Mojave's discrmination last weekend (whiny thread to come soon lol). But it's probably something I did wrong.

Pee on the ring, put it in a plastic zip bag, put it in the microwave for 30 seconds but don't turn it on, bury it overnite ............
