Does any from San Antonio, TX know if Bexar County Parks allow metal detecting? I couldn't find any information on their website and I thought I ask here before calling their office. Thanks everyone.

Is this the website you were using ?

If so, I see nothing there that says "no metal detectors". Thus, that should be the answer to your question, eh ? However, I do see a prohibition on nudity. So don't detect naked, haha.

Or if you're worried that even though the park's people themselves don't have any prohibitions, that perhaps there's something higher up for ...... simply "all county land". Eg.: all road right of ways, eminent domain land, dirt around their buildings, etc.... Then here's the county itself's website:

http://www.co.bexar.tx.us/

I haven't scrolled through that to find the tab to any muni codes, laws, etc..... But you're welcome to do so.

If there is no Federal or State laws against it I would just go if there is no signs posted. I wouldn't ask because any restriction would be a code or ordinance. You would not be expected to read the codes for a recreational activity. If someone in authority asks you to leave I would obey them as they would have the authority to enforce any codes. Don't ask but go low key till you get the feel of the area. No shovel. No pouch. No knee pads etc.

Huh ? Sure you would . All persons are expected to know the law. But I think what you meant to say (correct me if I'm wrong), that if there were an honest mistake, with something that a "reasonable person" would not have expected a law or rule about, that ...... normally someone will alert/inform you.

I agree about knowing the law. There is a difference between a law and a code though. There would probably be no law against setting your grill under the pavilion and roasting some wienies. If there is a sign posted saying all fires must be contained in the provided pits you would be in violation of the code and you should know better.

You are right about reasonable expectations. It would not be a mistake to detect a park that is not posted in my opinion. As a general rule the park personnel would be in charge of enforcing codes along with local law enforcement. Park personnel would not enforce laws. It can sound complicated. That's why you get out of your car and just detect if there is no posted restriction.

I finally found a .pdf saying mding is not allowed. Thanks everyone for your replies. Here is a link to the .pdf

Counties in Texas are a bit more lax about detecting. In Brazoria County they encourage detecting in all but the one park deemed a historic sight. The one everyone would like to hunt most.

You're right about the historic sites. I think everyone should check to be sure they are not on an historic site or any site restricted by state or federal law.

ah, good catch. I had to go back to the starter page that I'd given you the link for. Was asking myself "where did he find that ??". And sure enough: if you go to various individual parks themselves, and from there click on park rules, only then does that line come up. I had stopped clicking when I read the briefer re-cap on the beginning page.

One way to alleviate this (for anyone fearing that they haven't clicked on enough clicks, to find the most comprehensive list), is this: Rather than going to ask someone "hi, can I metal detect?". You can ask them: "Where is the long-version comprehensive list of do's & don'ts rules?". Then presumably they would show you to some link, or hand you the binder, or whatever. Then yes, you would find pertinent rules such as this, if they exist.

Just because there is not a sign posted, does not mean detecting is allowed. On the gates of the Quabbin watershed, they have signs that say what is and what is not allowed. Detecting is not on these signs, but, detecting IS prohibited none the less. It is on the website, but not the signs.
