Ok, so I have had my F2 now for about a month and I am thinking I need to upgrade to the 10" or 11"DD. I have mostly been hunting on my own property which is an old farmstead from the 1800s. I have found your standard old farm iron, however all the clad I've found has been from the 1970s and is about 4" deep. I am even finding Coke cans from the 1980s that are burried 6" deep. So my thought is, if I have any good stuff (pre 1950s coins), they have to be buried a lot deeper than 6". I refuse to think that there are no silver coins on my property. So...what are your thoughts? 10"....DD?...or give this F2 to my kid and upgrade to something else?
thanks, Darin |

I too have a fisher f2. I have been thinking about upgrading but not sure if the 10'' coil would be a good choice for this summer and then upgrade over the winter months! With the price of the 10'' being alot cheaper that the DD, I would go with the 10''.

Dang! thats deep!
I think the F2 is a good machine, however I think I am expecting more out of it. Maybe a larger coil will help.

I have a F2 with the DD on it. with my soil I cant really hunt to much in AM mode but I do coin shoot with it so I can tell you that the 11" DD added about 1-3" to some coins in my test garden, it really all depends on the coin. Will the 11" DD make it a e-trac? well no, but if your just looking for a a reliable inch or 2 then grab the 11" if you wanna go to 10" on a coin I would recommend the upgrade option. with my F2 I can strike a dime at about 7-8" tops, maybe its my soil and thats with my DD, stock I use to grab them at like 4-5" but I have heard a few people on these forums whom grab them at 8" with the stock coil lol so I mean I guess it depends on where your at and how the coin is laying, but all in all I can tell you, IN my soild I added anywhere from 10-30% depth with the DD

I can dig targets at 4-6 inches easily with my 8" coil, and I have dug dimes in the past at 7" or a little more.
I am going to get the 10" and try it out. As coils go, this is actually pretty cheap. The more expensive DD coil might go deeper in mineralization, but the concentric is the deepest in mild soil. __________________ |

I used the 8" concentric coil for about 6 months, then upgraded to the 11" DD. The bigger coil certainly finds deeper coins, but what I like the most is the way the DD allows you to use less overlap for each sweep and can discriminate close objects better than the concentric. To me, it was worth the price.

how do you determine what type of soil you have? I know everywhere I go is trashy as heck, but could not figure out the soil type.

Hey Darin-
From another F2 owner- I'm learning that to find the deeper items more consistently, it has a lot to do with how close together my sweeps are together than how big my coil is. Consider the fact that the electromagnetic field emitted from your coil is in the shape of a cone. At around 8" depth, your detecor may only be cutting a pea-sized swath. The key is to tightly overlap your sweeps so those pea-sized swaths are close to eachother. Try it out (if you're not already), and see if it helps. You'll cover ground more slowly, but you'll find more deep stuff. Also pay attention to those softer beeps when they're deep. Digger27 (who posted above on your thread) has some great posts on this topic. After changing my technique to tighter overlaps, I've been finding deeper (6"-8" w/8" coil), older coins at places I've detected before. Previously at these locations I was finding only modern clad down to about that cursed 4" depth you mentioned. So, try out the slow, thorough method & see what it does for you (not assuming you're not doing this, but thought it's worth mentioning since I went through the same thing as you). Hope it helps! As someone mentioned, the double-D coil enables you to cover ground a little quicker, because it has a wider swath at max depth...at least that's what I've read. __________________ |

I have two F2's. I purchased the 3 coil package a few months ago. I really like the 10" coil. It has given me extra depth and has hit targets that my standard coil missed. It is not that expensive compaired to the 11" DD and has a made a difference in getting some of those deeper targets.

Thanks guys....
Snoop, I will have to slow my swing down. I usually try to, but it always seems like im short on time and want to cover ground quickly. thanks! |

This hunt proved it... http://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=77890 I wrote about my "Paradigm Shift" in thinking, here. http://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=78080 I kept coming back to this site, hitting it slow and from different angles, and over time found much more clad, 2 gold rings and a couple of silver necklaces, too. __________________ |

As far as the coil Iuse the 11 DD on my F2. It will get coins up to 8 inches. The other question is the property. my partner and I got to hunt at a 1800's site. My thoughts with an AT PRO and F2 at work that someone would get a coin. Lucky for us the ranch owner let us use the mule ATV to get around and load our finds in the back. We dug so much iron and trash it was silly. The best areas were worked pretty hard and didn't produce any coins or anything worth talking about. So are there any coins their any coins to be found? I think that one is hiding somewhere. The f2 should find it so keep hunting and let us know when you do. Good luck!
