Today I found my first U.S. Military button. Internet searches appear to have conflicting info; some state WWI and some state WWII.

The button is not magnetic.

Can someone help? This is one of my favorite finds so far. Thank you!

From 1910-1923 a black finish was applied, but I can't tell in the photo if I'm seeing that or just a very dark brown patina.
Being able to read the backmark may (or may not) help, as there were some manufacturers that made them for either one war or the other (but many made them during both).

Thanks to all who have responded thus far. I scrubbed it a bit more but I am about at my upper comfort level. I am unable to get anything off the back. Here's the best photo of it I can get before I regrettably start removing finish. Does this help or am I just going to have to assume its WWII based on the other items I have found in the ground near it? (3 wheaties but only one with a readable date 195_ something).

Run it by a military museum, they would likely be able to tell you, there should be plenty in NC.

My dad was in the USA during Korea, and I believe the buttons like that on his USA heavy wool coat were dark green, if I recall correctly.
