Can someone tell me what this was for?

I'm a little unsure. Anyway it got me a little excited when I saw the size in the plug :no:

It would have been given to a customer. The serial number is registered to that customer. You put it on your keyring and if your keys get lost the finder just dropped them in the mailbox and the company gets them and returns them to the customer. I had one from G.M. at one time.

Yep. They had little license plate things like that also, if someone found your lost keys, they'd put in a mailbox for return to owner.

Seems like I recall some motel/hotel keys used to have that also a long time back. I wasn't much of a traveler though so I could be mistaken.

You are correct. In case by accident you forgot to leave the key in the room you could drop it in the nearest letter box and the motel would get it returned! :lol:
