Pewter buttons

Recently found a couple of pewter buttons from an 1812 site.

Been told they are fragile and may break. Would coating them with clear nail polish be a good idea or not?

A 50/50 mix of Elmer's glue and water would work. Some people use hairspray as well. I think I'd avoid using nail polish, though.
