I found one of those metal, toe tap, shoe guards. I wonder if those were mostly on military issued boots or do people find them in areas that were never connected with the civil war. Any ideas? I found one at this guys house

James Clifford Company F 12th Illinois Infantry

Thanks

They are from the time period of the civil war , and was common wear for that period. Used by solders and civilians.

KIMG0343.jpgI find them in Michigan, which certainly isn't within the area of Civil War battles. I won't say we aren't connected to the war though, since I have found several uniform buttons (a few block-I buttons in one yard even!), a couple minies, J-hooks and a couple belt buckles from CW uniforms. Presumably from veterans (sometimes I can actually trace the property to a particular veteran...)

Anyway, I find the toe taps mostly where I'm finding other mid to late 1800's relics.

They sometimes have patent dates on them too.

Some Civil War examples

Top example, along with boot remnants, was recovered in a Soldiers winter hut.
