Deliberately digging a very trashy part of the beach yesterday to get to know the Deus II better, I came across this, which I initially thought was a door knob.
It's a fuze for a French 50mm mortar bomb.
There was a WW2 German bunker nearby that housed a captured French mortar, designated 210(f) in German service. The black and white photo is of the actual position and mortar that would have fired it.
