Default North Carolina areas open to public

Hey all, Im kinda new to the metal detecting as well as chat forums, in a couple weeks I will be in North Carolina for about a week. I was hoping to do some looking for civil war relics, but I have no idea where to go or how to go about finding propperty to search. I am from Illinois and plan on visiting the emerald mines in the frankilin are so I guess we will be in the western part of the state, any advice will go along way. Thanks Dan

Find a spot, hunt it and dig any signals you get. Happy hunting.

I grew up in that area and there wasn't much activity thru there. Your best bet is to head south toward the Georgia line. There was also some activity around Waynesville which is east of Franklin (go hwy 107 north to hwy 19-23 and head east). I never really got into researching much of the civil war around there, but it was pretty minimal from what I understand and have found in the past. Waynesville was the original county, then Jackson (Sylva) and Macon (Franklin) counties were add-ons later on in history. I wanna say around 1870's. Waynesville would be your best choice, depending on how much time you have there. Just look up some on Haywood county which is Waynesville. You might also try Dillard and Clayton Georgia, which is just south of Franklin.

I have to disagree with Jasper, but if you come by WNC give me a ring. I'd love to take you around and share some spots with you! HH
