Default Carbon Fiber Coin Probe.

I was looking around and came across this probe mentioned in another thread. No further discussion seemed apparent, so I thought I'd ask.

Has anyone looked at one or better yet, used one? How do you like it? I'm thinking it would be handy in the sports fields and a park that I recently found out about.

Here is a picture.

I would be afraid it would be too brittle. CF is strong on compression, not flexion.

Flexing. Do you mean for prying the coin out. It that how it's used?
I figured you used it to probe for the coin and then pop it out with a screw driver or cut a plug. I kind of figured it was like probing with an ice pick, only eliminates the scratching that could occur with something steel or brass.

Ok. How is a coin probe properly used?
And does this tool do the job?

As I understand it, you probe for the coin with the probe, then pop the coin out with a screw driver or whatever. It's only to mark just where the coin is. I've seen it online before but never used one.

That is there purpose, but I promise you that there are many times when it will get knocked sideways while stuck in the ground, or hit by the screwdriver while popping the coin. I use a metal probe every hunt.

Yeah, that's why they make fishing rods out of the stuff.

Ok. So more than likely, I'm better off sticking to my long handled screwdriver for the sports fields. The school has no problem with my son and I hunting. They just don't want their turf dug up. The mulched play ground is no problem. I'm just nervous regarding the actual fields.
Thanks everyone, for the replies. HH

Yep thats right. It depends on how the fibers are oriented. Do you want something flexy like a fishing pole, or do you want something stiff to push into the ground? If you want it stiff you run the risk of snapping it like a toothpick.

Personally I don't see how CF would be an improvement in any way. It will cost more than a steel rod, it wont be as durable as a steel rod, scratching coins isn't a problem with steel if used correctly. A proper probe should have a ball on the tip, or at least be rounded. Not sharp like a ice-pick.

I'm no expert, but you maybe thinking of carbon composite. Carbon fiber will flex, just depends on how the fibers are aligned. My RC Helicopter is constucted mostly of carbon fiber rods. Must of crashed a hundred times, and haven't broken one yet. They make carbon fiber rotor blades, but they are kind of expensive.

As mentioned, there are carbon fiber fishing poles. There are also tennis rackets, golf clubs, and quite a few other high stress, and flex applications. If it was that brittle, doubt it sell.

Now, if this probe is made overseas, it could be most anything, even recycled plastic, painted black...

I still use my steel probe on shallow targets, often in conjunction with my Sunray X1.

I purchased one and it is much smaller than I expected. Have not yet learned to use it but will someday get around to trying! LOL
