So, I went to Carolina Beach in North Carolina for vacation this weekend. On Saturday me and my girlfriend were walking in the woods trying to find the river on a large piece of private property on the "island" at Carolina Beach. We came across a relatively large crater-looking hole measuring 4.5 feet deep and 25 feet in diameter. I knew right away that it was not natural. I know that there was lots of civil war activity on the island, as well as world war 2. The place I found this pit is OLD. It is at the very top of a knoll, very high elevation for the coast. There were large live oaks all around, larger than you can reach around. There are no roads within a mile, no paths or anything, just old growth trees. I brought my metal detector back yesterday and found things. I couldnt Identify any of the items, however. All of the items were deep. I feel that I dug most of the targets around the hole, but still confused what went on there. The 2 brass items were 8 inches each, and the iron was deeper. I am baffled by this. Could it be a Civil War trench? Or could it be where a bomb went off for world war 2 training? Does anyone recognize the items in the pictures? Please help! I may need to go back!
