Default cleaning or no cleaning?

I found a 1826 large cent today and was curious as to clean it with anything other then water and mild detergent or not? I could barely make out the date and didnt want to use anything on it to damage it. I believe it to have most markings left but isn't really visible untill i get the crusty's off. Thanks for any help.
