Default newbie from western pa.

Hi all, I am brand new into metal detecting, bought my first md 2 weeks ago
an have a few questions, first off I bought the BH discover legacy 3300. I have taken it out quite a few times recently an found a few coins, an old police badge an a whole lot of scrap lol. One problem I have with this detector is the screen on it registers a whole of lot of 199 which is the highest reading on the machine, but there is so many of these in the area that I hunt if you dug everyone there would be no grass left. I have turned the sensitivity down it dont seem to help much, I also have played with the ground balance to, same result. Like I said earlier I am brand new into this hobby but I have no experience at all. Any help or hints would be sincerely appreciated. thanks guys an gals

Welcome from western NC Penna. After re-reading the 3300's online manual several times, you may need more expertise than what I have in regards to eliminating your 199 readings which are usually heavily rusted iron targets bleeding over into the coin range. As a result they cannot be notched out or zapped out, if showing up on the far right side of your screen. Other than using the Discrimination mode and not digging anything above 135, I don't know of much else you can do besides cutting back on your sensitivity. What is happening to your detector is not all that unusual, even the best of detectors can have rusted iron targets bleed over into the coin and silver range. I will often dig one or two pieces of small rusted iron in mistake for coins each trip out.
